Orange County is the third most populous county in California, with more than 3 million people and the 6th most populous in the US. Its airport John Wayne International airport handles almost 10 million passengers per year, making it the second most important in the region after LAX.
As of 2014, the largest airlines at John Wayne Airport were Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.
The airport has 2 parallel runways, 2L/20R and 2R/20L. Runway 2L/20R is 5700ft is one of the shortest of any major airport in the United States, and runway 2R/20L is only 2887 feet long and mainly used by general aviation aircrafts.
Passenger airliners at the airport have never been larger than the Boeing 757. Some gates are built to handle planes up to the size of a Boeing 767, which could operate with payload/fuel load restrictions. No wide-body passenger airliners have ever been scheduled at SNA.
John Wayne Airport is 14 miles (23 km) from Orange County’s main attraction – the Disneyland Resort. (Los Angeles International Airport is 35 miles (56 km) from Disneyland.)
The development team of LatinVFR has made a authentic possible version for FSX and Prepar3D and even for FS2004. I will have a closer look at the P3D version.
The scenery can be bought from the official LatinVFR site or from several aviation stores for 20 euro. The download is about 265 MB in size and takes about 760 MB of your flight installation folder after installation. Activation is by serial key requested when installing , the installation is very straight forward and needs no extra user actions.
After installation you will find a shortcut on the desktop that will open the airport configuration. A few options can be changed here to optimize performance and also the manual.
The manual is a bit disappointing and includes no charts or airport diagram which are almost basic compared to some other manuals. Also no recommended settings are included. What is included and something I’m missing in many other airport manuals is a list of airlines and their destination that visit the airport.
- Thank you note
- Airport background
- Airlines and destinations
- General flying tips

Overall the airport has very good quality with correct placement of ground sings, animated holding point lights, hangars and many more . The runways, ramp and taxiways have nice sharp high res texture and have a realistic dirt effect.
All airport buildings have been perfectly remodeled and placed at the correct location. Few the airport terminals even features internal modeling but don’t expect too much tough. You have the option to turn on static aircraft unfortunately most of them are all the same Cessna’s and business jet so a bit variation would increase the realism unfortunately their are no static aircrafts at the gates nor at the open air covered parking spaces,
The ramp includes a few static vehicles but some animated or static ground crew would be nice as well. The airport features 3D grass which can be turned off in the configurator, I personally love how it looks with the option enabled. The many parking lots are all occupied by static cars which makes the airport more realistic. Firetrucks and ambulances are all placed in front of their respective buildings so the airport feels pretty realistic.
Various buildings have been remodeled on the airport vicinity like the Lyon Air museum which is a nice feature. There also a few Helipads occupied by a static Helicopters, unfortunately these aren’t available in the FX/P3D airport selection menu.
LatinVFR also included Downtown Irvine & Newport Beach and 14 miles of photo scenery with custom autogen object. When flying a helicopter you can land on the many helipads of several skyscrapers. Several buildings have been modeled and place accurate like the different hotels, bank and Oracle office. The nearby vicinity features golf courses and tennis courts although most of the textures look adequite , the photoscenery looks just awefull at lower altitutes and very blurry which is a big letdown after all the positive things i’ve seen. But lukly you can turn this off in the configurator as well .Also included is Newport Beach which could use some static boats cause it looks very deserted.
Lighting at night looks great as you can see at the shot although some of the airport approach lights have to much bloom. You can change the lighting to fs9 style, which helps a bit.
No incomptabilities were encountered when using LatinVRF’s scenery. Other sceneries used;
- ORBX FTX BASE
- ORBX FTX vector
- ORBX North California
note for fsx DX10 users.
Night textures are not DX10 compatible and you need Steve’s dX10 fixer when using DX10 preview in FSX.
Overall performance was excellent with all possible sliders maxed out, I was still getting a stable +60 FPS in every VC of any of my payware GA aircrafts. When unticking some options in the configurator every system should have no problems running this scenery.
My system specs:
Intel I7 5820K overclocked to 4,8 ghz
16 GB DDR4 memory
2x GTX 980 in SLI
Windows 8.1 x64 pro
P3D very minimal tweaked with a custom Nvidia Inspector profile
Although there is room for improvement around the airport area, the airport itself is very well modeled and detailed. The price is right in the same range as similar products and It’s without doubt one of the better LatinVFR products,
LatinVFR Orange County John Wayne KSNA€ 18.14
